As most of you know, I occasionally enter a topical joke on my blog for a little humour and readers can be excused for thinking the following is a joke. But, alas, it is true.
The following appeared in a newspaper called the Daily Star Sunday 14th December 2008 on page 28.
Bank’s slur on English
A Bank refused to open an account with the word English.claiming the term was racist. The Bexley branch of the English Democrats – who campaign for England to leave the EU – wanted to open an HSBC account in Sidcup, Kent.
But Chairman Laurence Williams was astonished when a bank worker refused to process the application. Mr Williams, 45, said “The word English is not racist and the English Democrats are not racist”
When the party’s regional chairman Steve Uncles called HSBC’s area manager to protest at the treatment he was told the bank stood by the decision because anything English was considered racist. An HSBC spokesman said “We do not comment on individual cases”
As a footnote to this article the English Democrats are an official political party registered with the Electoral Commission – and they allow the name!
