Respect!

Although I am not a conservative and could never vote for any party other than the one I align myself to, I have read this article in the Daily Telegraph and have a lot more respect for a London Politician.

Telephones just matured

There are some interesting videos describing the new Google offering at:

http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html#

It is quite an amazing system but, alas, is not yet available in the United Kingdom. There are, no doubt, expensive costs and regulations to master before they can roll this out to other countries. I, personally, am hoping they roll this out to the UK as soon as possible.

It can do a number of things, but here are the things that will be useful to me. First of all, I would get my phone number from Google, an 020 number, although I would be able to get any exchange number in the UK.

Then I could direct all calls at certain times to either my home number, my work number or my cellphone at no cost.

If a message is left on the voicemail of any of the three numbers it would be sent to me as an email, which could be forwarded to my cellphone if I so wished.

I could leave different voicemail messages to different groups on my GMail contacts. So a worklike message could be given to my work contacts, and a relaxed message to my friends. I could leave a separate voicemail message to a single person. Imagine Jennifers face when she calls and hears: “Hi Jennifer, how are you?” a short gap and then “I’m not available right now but if you leave a message I promise I will ring you as soon as possible”.

SMS messages could be sent to me by email, I could reply on the email and the reply part would be sent back, also as an SMS messages at no charge.

Conference calls can easily be made, and it is a doddle to block callers!

Anyway, go watch the videos yourself and be patient.

A reason for introducing publicly elected Sheriffs

I first received this email in a jokes section and didn’t believe a word of it, so I researched on the ‘net and found it all to be true. First the story I received, then the results of my checking the web. How I would like him as our Inspector of Prisons!

USA Jail – Some interesting reading.

To those of you not familiar with Joe Arpio, he is the Maricopa Country sheriff (Arizona) and he keeps getting re-elected over and over again.

These are some of the reasons why:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio created the ‘tent city jail’ to save Arizona from spending tens of millions of dollars on another expensive prison  complex.

He has jail meals down to 15 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He banned smoking and pornographic magazines in the jails, and took away their weightlifting equipment and cut off all but ‘PG’ movies. He says:  ‘They’re in jail to pay a debt to society not to build muscles so they can assault innocent people when they leave.’

He started chain gangs to use the inmates to do free work on county and city projects and save taxpayer’s money.

Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn’t get sued for discrimination.

He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only allows the Disney channel and the weather channel.

When asked why the weather channel,he replied: ‘So these morons will know how hot it’s gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.’

He cut off coffee because it has zero nutritional value and is therefore a waste of taxpayer money. When the inmates complained, he told them, ‘This isn’t  the Ritz/Carlton. If you don’t like it, don’t come back.’

He also bought the Newt Gingrich lecture series on US history that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series that actually tells the truth for a change would be welcome and that it might even explain why 95% of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record for June 2nd 2007), the Associated Press reported: About 2,000 inmates living in  a barbedwire surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts.

On the Wednesday, hundreds of men  wearing pink boxer shorts were overheardchatting in the tents, where temperatures reached 128 degrees.

‘This is hell. It feels like we live in a furnace,’ said Ernesto Gonzales, an inmate for 2 years with 10 more to go. ‘It’s inhumane.’

Joe Arpaio, who makes his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic. ‘Criminals should be punished for their crimes – not live in luxury until it’s time for parole, only to go out and commit more crimes so they can come back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things  many taxpayers can’t afford to have for themselves.’

The same day he told all the inmates who were complaining of the heat in the tents: ‘It’s between 120 to 130 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to walk all day in the sun, wearing full battle gear and get shot at, and they have not committed any crimes, so shut your damned mouths!’

Way to go, Sheriff! If all prisons were like yours there would be a lot less crime and we would not be in the current position of running out of prison spaces.

So I did a little research on the Internet and came up with the following information. This sheriff has been elected for five consecutive four year terms, read on…

You probably know him as “America’s Toughest Sheriff,” a name given to him years ago by the media. It’s a name he certainly has earned as head of the nation’s third largest Sheriff’s Office which employs over 3000 people. But even before he became Sheriff in 1993, Joe Arpaio was one tough lawman. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1953, and as a Washington, D.C., and Las Vegas, NV, police officer for almost five years, Arpaio went on to build a federal law enforcement career and a reputation for fighting crime and drug trafficking around the world.

He began his career as a federal narcotics agent, establishing a stellar record in infiltrating drug organizations from Turkey to the Middle East to Mexico, Central, and South America to cities around the U.S. His expertise and success led him to top management positions around the world with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He concluded his remarkable 32-year federal career as head of the DEA for Arizona.

In 1992 Arpaio successfully campaigned to become the Sheriff of Maricopa County. Since then he has been reelected to an unprecedented five 4-year terms. During his tenure as Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arpaio has consistently earned extraordinarily high public approval ratings.

With over four decades experience in law enforcement, Arpaio knows what the public wants, “The public is my boss,” he says, “so I serve the public.” He has served them well by establishing several unique programs.

Arpaio has over 10,000 inmates in his jail system. In August, 1993, he started the nation’s largest Tent City for convicted inmates. Two thousand convicted men and women serve their sentences in a canvas incarceration compound. It is a remarkable success story that has attracted the attention of government officials, presidential candidates, and media worldwide.

Of equal success and notoriety are his chain gangs, which contribute thousands of dollars of free labor to the community. The male chain gang, and the world’s first-ever female and juvenile chain gangs, clean streets, paint over graffiti, and bury the indigent in the county cemetery.

Also impressive are the Sheriff’s get tough policies. For example, he banned smoking, coffee, movies, pornographic magazines, and unrestricted TV in all jails. He has the cheapest meals in the U.S. too. The average meal costs about 15 cents, and inmates are fed only twice daily, to cut the labor costs of meal delivery. He even stopped serving them salt and pepper to save tax payers $20,000 a year.

Another program Arpaio is very wellknown for is the pink under shorts he makes all inmates wear. Years ago, when the Sheriff learned that inmates were stealing jailhouse white boxers, Arpaio had all inmate underwear dyed pink for better inventory control. The same is true for the Sheriff’s handcuffs. When they started disappearing, he ordered pink handcuffs as a replacement. And later, when the Sheriff learned the calming, psychological effects of the color pink—sheets, towels, socks— everything inmates wear, except for the old-fashioned black and white striped uniform, were dyed pink.

Arpaio has started another controversial program, the website www.mcso.org, so that all those arrested (about 300 per day) are recorded on the Sheriff’s website as they are booked and processed into jail. Just under a million hits daily come into the website, making it one of the most visible law enforcement sites on the World Wide Web.

In addition to these tough measures, the Sheriff has launched rehabilitative programs like “Hard Knocks High,” the only accredited high school under a Sheriff in an American jail, and ALPHA, an anti-substance-abuse program that has greatly reduced recidivism.

As chief law enforcement officer for the county, Arpaio continues to reduce crime with hard-hitting enforcement methods. His deputies and detectives have solved several high-profile murder cases, including nine child murders. The posse, whose ranks have increased to 3,000 members under Arpaio, is the nation’s largest volunteer posse. Posse men and women help in search and rescue and other traditional police work as well as in special operations like rounding up deadbeat parents, fighting prostitution, patrolling malls during holidays, and investigating animal cruelty complaints. The posse’s contributions are invaluable and essentially free to taxpayers.

No wonder Sheriff Arpaio has been profiled in over 2,000 U.S. and foreign newspapers, magazines, and TV news programs. His leadership and the excellent work of his staff have catapulted the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office into the ranks of elite law enforcement agencies.

On a personal note, Sheriff Arpaio and his wife Ava have been married for over 51 years and have two children, both residing in the Phoenix area. The Arpaios have four grandchildren.

Arpaio looks forward to many more years as Sheriff of Maricopa County.

We must look after our soldiers!

At last the Government are doing something for ex-servicemen and their dependants.

However, I have to declare I am definitely heavily biased on this subject!

The following shows basically, the difference between the Conservatives and the Socialists. When I was in the Army, Profumo was the Minister, and he did a cracking job of making sure our pay and equipment was the best. OK he was involved with Christine Keeler and Many Rice-Krispies as we called her at the time (Many Rice-Davies – I met her brother once at a computer exhibition.) But Profumo resigned immediately and worked in the East End with unfortunate children for the rest of his life – an honourable gentleman! No wonder we all thought he was the bees knees!

When a soldier leaves the army he will be screened for various mental health issues. I can hear a lot of older vets saying they’re wimps for needing this, but it’s not true. We older soldiers were made of sterner stuff, we grew up embrasing a little danger – pre the “elf and safe tea” generation. We were not molly-coddled as are the youth of today. These kids need all the help we can give them when they leave the armed forces.

Liam Fox, the Defence Secretary, is also backdating some of the perks and benefits to soldiers who have left the service over the last twenty years. Let’s hope he doesn’t get shouted down by the Coalition.

The perks will include free bus and train travel for the first five years. This will certainly help them, not only relocate, but explore several areas before making their decision. Once they have decided where would be best for work, the Government will help with a subsidised mortgage. In addition, soldiers will also be eligible for grants towards studying at University.

Veterans will also be encouraged to retain as teachers, or to receive training in other areas. This is important as these guys have fought for our country – it is not important to start arguing whether we should have been in the two major conflicts – I personally have always subscribed to “If we weren’t over there bombing them, they wouldn’t be over here bombing us”, the important thing is, they went whereever their Government sent them to fight for our cause.

There are also plans being considered to help the families of serving soldiers in the front line. This has to be good news and these wives (and mothers) trying to bring up their offspring with the constant fear that they will never see their husband or father ever again must be a constant energy sapping experience. How can we begrudge them some help from the taxpayer? They are ours to nurture.

Initially, soldier who have served on the front line since 1990 will be eligible for help – however, this will only be an initial cost as, once these people have been helped, it will only be the recent veterans who will be eligible, it is thought that these could be as many as 70,000. However, a small catch, soldiers on reserve will be asked to increase the length of reserve. (The reserve is a list of soldiers who can be recalled for service.)

In addition, schools teaching the children of those serving will receive extra funding, This has to be a good thing as the schools run by Marxists do not welcome children from soldiers and it may be easier for parents identify schools who will welcome their children.

Children of those who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan will receive free University education. This alone is worth a small fortune for the cash strapped families.

Why I refuse to donate for the Pakistan disaster.

When I said I wouldn’t give a penny at my local pub the other night I was accused of Islamophobia.

Nothing could be further from the truth, I don’t hate Muslims any more or any less than I hate anyone else!

No, the reason why I refuse to help these people is that the Pakistan Government do have money.

On September 19th, 2009. China and Pakistan inked an agreement for the promotion of satellite technology worth $222 million. The Ministry of Economic Affairs Division Secretary, Farrukh Qayyum and Chinese ambassador in Pakistan, Luo Zhaohui signed on the agreement. Under the agreement China will provide easy loan for 20 years, which would be utilized for the completion of different projects of Pak Sat-II.

In addition to this, there are other funds being used in space research in Pakistan.

I am very happy to help these poor people but only when Pakistan uses their space funds to help their dying people. I get very annoyed when they want to hang on to their money and expect the West to bail them out with taxpayers funds and people’s donations.

Hard times ahead.

Everyone with a garden in Britain during the second world war turned their gardens into small holdings for growing their vegetables. Save the extortionate costs of going to the Gym and work in your garden for exercise so you can save money.

Become a part time evening or week-end pamphleteer. The pay is lousy, but the exercise will also replace the costly Gym fees!

Search the Internet for war time menus, you’ll learn how to eat nutritionally, lose all that extra weight, and save money.

Why drink in the high price pubs? Try Wetherspoons, the same beer is almost half the price of many other chains. Or, better still, make one evening a week “party night” at one of your homes and buy your beer in from the Supermarket.

What I am trying to say here is, use your imagination so that, instead of just existing, you actually enjoy life, without having to spend a fortune.

Common sense

Nobody listens to common sense and the problem could lie with the term’s name.

If we changed the first word to “clever” then perhaps the great and the good would take more notice of it?

Another thing, having been brought up amongst many species of animals I have found that if we want to work out the best thing to do, a lot of lessons can come from animals. After all, humans are just a higher species of animals who can think and plan.

Take smacking as an example. If you have ever seen a pride of lions basking in the sun, contented after killing a Wildebeest for lunch and noted the cubs playing around their father who uses his paw to give them a light smack to request they desist biting his tail, you might note that a gentle smacking when children push to find out their limits in one direction might help, rather than hinder the child.

Too many people have been brought up with the belief that “it’s the government’s responsibility. It is time to learn how to support yourself and look after your well-being yourselves.

I had to pause writing at this point as my lunch was ready

We watch the news as we have lunch and I saw the terrible accident in an American desert truck race. People were standing close to the speeding trucks, one lost control and crashed into the crowd killing a handful and injuring dozens of others.

My wife said “They shouldn’t be allowed to stand so close”.

This did annoy me a little and I said “Why? Who is going to stop them, the Government? If they want to risk death by standing so close to the speeding trucks, and get the thrill of the race, why should anyone stop them? It is their responsibility

People have to learn to take responsibility for their actions

It is not up to a government to tell us what is for our own good.

We have to learn to run our own lives.
